Jaguar is finally returning to racing. One of Britain’s most successful racing names is going to return to the track in force in 2016 as Jaguar launches a team in the Formula E Championship. This all-electric version of formula racing is going to be used as the basis for Jaguar’s upcoming push into the EV and hybrid space.

Jaguar has almost zero experience in the field of hybrids and EV drivetrains, and using the battlefield of motorsport to fast-track advancements and engineering of electric drivetrain components can help the legendary brand catch up to some of its German and Japanese rivals. Jaguar will be reaching out to Williams Advanced Engineering for help on the project, the same team that helped created the radical C-X75 hybrid concept.

The new car will debut next fall, and should compete in every race of Formula E’s third season. We can’t wait to see the leaping cat on a new race car, and hopefully this will open up the chances of seeing Jaguar compete in other higher levels of motorsport as well. I wouldn’t mind seeing a new British Racing Green car on the Formula One grid.
