The next generation of Chrysler LLC’s ultimate super car/track rat-the Dodge Viper-is still at the least a year away. Since it made its final bow in 2010, there has been a void left behind for those seeking the brutality accompanied by its massive V10 engine. Fortunately, the company’s in-house performance and tuning shop, Mopar, will soon offer something to hold over the deprived: a Viper crate engine. Ready to fire will be a fully built, all aluminum long block displacing 512 cubic inches and producing a race-ready 800 horsepower and 695 lb-ft of torque. Mopar does openly admit that this block is intended for drag racing purposes as it redlines at 7,000 rpms and carries a remarkably high 12.5:1 compression ratio. Included in the out-of-the box V10 will be a Mopar tuned ECU with maps set for the straight line strip. Of course, the company has no control over as to under what hood this V10 might find a home and there will surely be at least one ‘street’ car using this mill.

According to Car & Driver, Mopar will also offer certified bolt-on upgrade kits for the already installed 8.4 liter V10 found in the last Viper street cars. A combination of aluminum heads, a new upper intake manifold, larger throttle body and new fuel rails should add an extra 150 horsepower. And soon to accompany the crate engine and performance parts will be a road and off-road racing version of the V10.
