American Suzuki Motor Corp. on Wednesday said its U.S. sales rose in December, as car buyers snapped up the Japanese automaker's sport-utility vehicles.

Suzuki's December sales increased 9.8 percent to 7,317 vehicles from 6,662 vehicles during the same period a year ago. Adjusted for one fewer selling day this December compared to last year, Suzuki sales gained 14.1 percent.

The company said sales of its Grand Vitara SUV advanced 16.1 percent to 2,165 vehicles from 1,865 vehicles last year. Sales of the Suzuki Forenza/Reno small sedan rose 15.4 percent to 3,121 vehicles from 2,704 vehicles a year ago.

For the year, Suzuki sales improved 23 percent to 100,990 vehicles from 82,101 vehicles last year. Adjusted for one fewer selling day this year compared to last, Suzuki sales increased 23.4 percent.
