Tony Kanaan raced his way to victory at the 2013 Indianapolis 500 this afternoon after a long fought battle and years of close wins.

The Brazilian crossed the bricks of the finish line under caution after defending race winner Dario Franchitti crashed moments earlier. With the track under caution, the field held their positions as required and cruised past the checkered flag.

The win was a long time coming for Kanaan, who had led 225 laps before today’s Indy 500. Only drivers Michael Andretti and Rex Mays have led more laps without a victory. Kanaan came seriously close to winning the Indy 500 when he finished in second place in 2004.
