Volkswagen has announced that it is in the process of developing the first prototypes with high-temperature fuel cells and will begin trials of the vehicles in 2009. The remarks were made on Wednesday as VW laid out its future engine strategy.

“The first production vehicles, based on current forecasts, will not arrive on the market before the year 2020,” the company said in a statement. VW said the high-temperature fuel cells could deliver a breakthrough for hydrogen-powered engines at the end of the next decade.

VW Research has developed a high-temperature fuel cell that it says overcomes the disadvantages of earlier low-temperature fuel cells.
