Nissan’s newest racing adventure involves taking on Le Mans with a 1200 horsepower FWD prototype car. This marks the first time that any FWD car has ever even attempted to compete for the top spot at this legendary and historic race. So has Nissan brass gone insane by thinking they can compete in the world’s greatest endurance race with a FWD car?

Nissan doesn’t think so. They recently produced a video that explains in very simple terms why the car is FWD, and why they think it can work. For starters they are claiming a more efficient aerodynamic profile, and the FWD nature of the car means less driveline loss and fuel economy saved there as well. The result could be a car that will out-mpg the hybrid cars from Audi, Porsche and Toyota.

Of course, all this is just based on testing and theory; we won’t know how things shake out until the 24 Hours of Le Mans is over. Rest assured, we will have an update on what happens during the actual race. For now just watch this cool video to get an idea of why Nissan went FWD.
