A survey released by Zipcar Inc. reveals that mobile devices and on-demand transportation apps are more important to young people, between 8 to 34 years old called “Millennials”, than car ownership.

The survey examines the attitudes and behaviors of the young generation related to urban transportation, technology and car ownership.

The study, conducted in December 2012 by KRC Research, found that nearly 65% Millennials say losing their phone (30%) or computer (35%) would have a greater negative impact on their daily routine than losing their car (28%).

About 25% say transportation apps have reduced their driving frequency, compared to less than 12% of those 45+. Nearly 73% of Millennials would rather shop online than drive or ride public transit to the store. Nearly 47% of Millennials sometimes choose to spend time with friends online instead of driving to see them in person.

The third annual Millennials study included 1,015 adults nationwide, age 18 and over, with 980 licensed drivers.
