Two of Honda Motor Company’s most popular people haulers will soon undergo a safety recall for the same issue. The fuel tanks on both the Acura MDX and Honda Pilot may not have been installed to proper specification. Located inside the tank assembly is the Vent Shut Float (VSF) valve which helps control the fuel flow out of the case. If the design specifications are not met, gasoline could leak from the tank and ultimately lead to a vehicle fire.

At this point, Honda is investigating 8,709 SUVs. Both MDX and Pilot models affected are 2012 model years. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the automaker will begin the recall on or about March 13, 2012. Owners will be notified and instructed to take their vehicles to certified dealers where technicians will inspect the assembly date on the VSF. If needed, the entire fuel tank assembly will be replaced and done so at no extra cost to drivers.
