When the gearheads otherwise known as the editors of Winding Road went on their annual task of finding the best car under $20,000, they managed ending up in Korea. Landing on the spot for its debut year, the all-new three door coupe named the Hyundai Veloster got the trophy for being both useful and fun-t0-drive. The online publication looks for vehicles that are not only innovative but ones that carry an actual character.

“Lower weight plus lower consumption plus lower price equals more fun,” said Seyth Miersma, editor-in-chief for Winding Road. “We’re not math majors, but that’s something like the equation we believe Hyundai must have dreamed up when it first conceived of the 2012 Veloster. We were instant fans of the outstanding gearbox and the chuckable handling that Veloster offered, and quickly realized that the low starting price was likely to make it an enthusiast darling.” Judged on a 100-point scale, the competitors for Winding Road’s “Best” list are evaluated using more than 30 points of measure. Once recorded, the vehicles placing highest on their respective involvement index are given the nod. With 40 mpg, 138 horsepower, quirky styling and quick handling, the Veloster can do a lot of things for very little money.
