Two Chrysler LLC owned but relatively unrelated vehicles are being recalled for the same issue. Certain models of the midsize crossover Dodge Journey and the compact Fiat 500 may have been manufactured with contaminated brake fluid. If affected, the sour fluid will cause a rapid degradation of the seals and fittings in the braking system. Ultimately, this could lead to a complete loss of braking power and raises the risk of a crash ten-fold. According to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA), Chrysler will begin its recall during December. Once owners are notified, they will be able to take their vehicle to a certified dealer where every component which has come into contact with the bad fluid will be replaced free of charge.

So far, a total of 340 Dodge Journeys and Fiat 500s are being recalled. Both models being affected are 2012 model year vehicles manufactured from October 24 through October 26, 2011.
