Daimler has updated Mercedes/Freightliner Sprinter to compete with Ford and Chrysler in the competitive and profitable commercial van segment, reports Detroit Free Press.

Daimler is a maker of 15 commercial vehicles that it sells worldwide. Recently, the company has created dedicated commercial van divisions for every region, and Bernhard Glaser serves as new managing director of commercial vans for Mercedes-Benz USA, according to the news report.

The third-generation 2014 Mercedes Sprinter, with styling updates and more features, is expected to set a new sales record this year, according to Glaser.

The 2014 model starts at $37,000. Mercedes added a new 4-cylinder diesel engine and 7-speed transmission which will offer 18% better fuel economy than the 6-cylinder diesel and 5-speed transmission that will continue to be offered for an extra $910.

The third-generation 2014 Mercedes Sprinter faces a new round of competition.
