The home of General Motor’s Lambda-based SUVs, the Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia, is now Energy Star certified. The acknowledgement comes from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) who issued the certification due to the Lansing Delta Township Assembly Plant’s superior energy efficiency. Lansing is GM’s first U.S. assembly plant to receive such an honor and in order to even be qualified, the plant had to perform in the top 25 percent of all similar facilities nationwide.

Meeting the very strict energy performance levels set by the EPA in 2010 isn’t easy, but exceeding them is rather difficult. “Certifications like this demonstrate our commitment to improving energy efficiency practices beyond our vehicles,” said Mike Robinson, GM vice president for Sustainability and Global Regulatory Affairs. Every piece of the Lansing’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning meets LEED Gold standards. Efficient lighting is used at night while daylight harvesting is used during the day. And just to make sure everything is going according to plan, energy management is integrated into monthly score cards. “Every day we stress the importance of building vehicles with the environment in mind,” said Scott Whybrew, Lansing regional plant manager. “The collaborative work by our employees to save energy and improve the efficiency of our plant is the key to achieving Energy Star Certification.”
