Mazda has successfully blown our little journalist brain with news that they will be bringing a diesel to the USA!

The next generation Mazda6 will hit showrooms as a 2014 model and will be available with a 2.2-liter Skyactiv-D diesel engine. This little motor comes with no official power levels or fuel economy details, but if it is in anyway comparable to the Passat TDI (its only real rival), look for a horsepower rating near 150 with torque hovering closer to the 250 range and an EPA rating of 40+ on the highway. But wait there’s more! This new sleek diesel sedan will also be available with a six-speed manual transmission (joy!).

This new venture makes Mazda the first Japanese automaker to offer an oil-burner in the USA.

While we wait for hard facts and figures on this new engine, we kindly ask that everyone start saving their cash. If this little gem sells well, it could encourage other manufacturers to start expanding their diesel options. We can only hope.
