The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is close to finalizing an online database at www.safercar.gov which allows car owners to check if their vehicles have been recalled, reports The Detroit News.

The new tool would allow vehicle owners to enter the vehicle identification number — or VIN — to find out if the vehicle has been recalled and if it’s been fixed, the newspaper reports.

The NHTSA is required to bring online a new online database under a highway funding bill signed into law on July 6, 2012, by President Barack Obama.

Under the law, the database is to be in place no later than one year after the law is in place.
