The product of a partnership between Nissan North America and Sumitomo Corporation will be making its way to the U.S. very soon. A DC quick charger intended for the zero emissions plug-in LEAF and even other electic vehicles will be for sale early 2012. In order to distribute, sell and install the chargers, Nissan will also team up with AeroVironment and pre-orders are already being taken with an online system opening January 2012. The 480 volt system will have the ability to fully charge the LEAF from a depleted or 80 percent full level in just 30 minutes.

“This charger is the first of its kind, and it’s truly revolutionary,” said Brian Carolin, senior vice president, sales and marketing for Nissan North America. “A low-cost DC quick charger unlocks the potential for unprecedented electric vehicle use and adoption. We anticipate thousands of these chargers will be installed across the country, enabling electric cars like the Nissan LEAF to be driven for even greater distances and durations.” With a starting price of $9,900, the system will undercut other available models by a third. Both an indoor and outdoor version will be offered.
