A voluntary recall will soon go underway by Nissan North America for a problem with side curtain air bags. On certain Versa and Altima models, the propellant mixture used for the initiator component may not be up to snuff. As a result, the window mounted air bag system would not have enough gusto due to an insufficient output of compressed gas and therefore, fail to deploy when called upon. To subdue the risk of injury in the event of an accident, Nissan will remedy the issue by inspecting and replacing one or both of the side curtain air bag modules.

The sedans affected by the recall are all 2012 model year vehicles. At this time, approximately 976 Versas and Altimas are at risk and Nissan is expecting to begin the notification process on or around February 27 of this year. According to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA), the fix will take place at certified dealers and be completed at no extra cost to vehicle owners.
