Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Motors, said that he’ll detail his plans to build a huge plant to make electric car batteries, so big that he calls it the “gigafactory,” USA Today reports.

Tesla is willing to make a case that they need their own battery source. Tesla thinks that the plant can also supply power to other carmakers.

Tesla in order to make their cars more mainstream would have to lower battery cost. Musk also said that “there’d be more than one partner in the plant”.

It is also reported that the Apple Inc. want to form a partnership with Tesla for their battery needs. Musk said that “the facility will be “heavily powered by renewables, wind and solar”.

Some analysts also believe that the Tesla plant would lock them into a single battery type and it would be tough for them to pivot if better technology emerges.
