John and Helen Taylor are an Australian couple. They recently spent 23 days driving a Chevrolet Cruze Eco across 9,552 miles in a trip sponsored by Shell Oil. The EPA rates the Cruze Eco at a highway fuel mileage average of 42 mpg. The Taylors achieved a steady 64 mpg during the whole trip, beating the EPA’s rating by 50 percent and setting a new record for the 48 contiguous states.

When the Cruze’s 1.4 liter turbocharged four cylinder engine is paired with the six speed manual, ECO mode is in place. In the city, the EPA rates the ECO at 28 mpg but after hearing of the mileage attained by the Taylors, it is safe to say that 30 plus mpg could be seen on the city streets. The EPA rating of 42 mpg still can not be beat by any gasoline powered car on the market today. It may be impressive, but perhaps the EPA should re-test the Chevrolet Cruze ECO after what John and Helen Taylor observed.
