Instead of simply disposing of roughly 300 waterlogged cars, crossovers, and SUVs via death-by-crusher, Chevy is donating them to help train first responders at the Guardian Centers in Perry, GA.

The first responders will use a few of the thousands of vehicles General Motors had damaged in Hurricane Sandy to create realistic training environments that include accidents, fires, wide area searches, counter terrorism, and mass casualty exercises.

The Guardian Center is purpose-built with a fully operational modern cityscape complete with parking garages and roadways. “This level of realism and effectiveness cannot be overstated,” says Geoff Burkart, founder and CEO of Guardian Centers. “You can’t expect first response professionals to conduct realistic training in a sterile environment.”
