Well we knew it was coming, but now it is official. Starting with the 2015 model year, the Corvette Stingray will be available with a new 8-speed automatic transmission. Thew new unit is dubbed the 8L90, and it is based on the 8-speed unit fond in the upcoming supercharge Corvette Z06, but it features unique clutch and torque converter specs to account for the Stingray’s lower torque and horsepower ratings.

Not only will this new transmission increase the overall refinement of America’s sports car, it will also increase fuel economy. GM doesn’t have official numbers from the EPA yet, but they expect a 5-percent overall boost.

If you are worried that the new transmission will dull the Corvette’s edge, have no fear. Not only has the 8-speed received much praise in the Z06, GM is claiming the new version for the Stingray has shift times that rival competitors dual-clutch units. A manual shifting option will also be offered via steering-wheel mounted paddles.

If you are upset at the thought off a torque converter in your shiny new Stingray, the 7-speed manual will still be the standard cog-swapper.
