General Motors announced that they will be investing $129 million into two assembly plants. The Toledo, Ohio and Bedford, Indiana plants both are apart of the developement and building of the fuel-saving eAssist transmissions currently found in Buick and Chevrolet models. For the next 18 months, GM will investing $2 billion into facilities, like the two powertrain plants, across eight states. This investment will go into a total of 17 facilities and should create or retain 4,000 jobs.

“GM is moving quickly to get more fuel-efficient technologies into our vehicles to benefit the consumer, and these investments are an example of the speed with which we are responding,” said Cathy Clegg, GM vice president of labor relations. The investment into Toledo and Bedford is clearly due to the sales influx of fuel efficient vehicles. The eAssist six speed automatic will be found in the next Buick Lacrosse and 2013 Chevrolet Malibu.
