Global General Motors will now be able to expand even further as the grand opening of Rayong, Thailand manufacturing plant took place not too long ago. The 54,275-square-meter facility is GM’s first diesel engine plant in the region and was made possible by way of a $200 million investment by the General. At first, the plant will be dedicated to the next generation of Asia and European spec Duramax diesel four cylinder engines with an estimated annual output of 120,000 units.

“Our engine plant will enable us to deliver on our promise of bringing cleaner, more efficient and higher-performance diesel engine technology to our customers,” said GM Southeast Asia President Martin Apfel. The engines being built are 2.5 and 2.8 liter overhead cam turbocharged diesels which will first find homes under the hood of the upcoming global Chevrolet Colorado pickup. To help reduce production costs and boost local, Thailand economy, approximately $94 million worth of Thai-built components will go into engine production by 2012.
