The west coast’s most popular road-course and home to the infamous “corkscrew” will continue on as the Mazda Raceway. Given the name in 2001, California’s Leguna Seca has been a centerpiece in American motorsports since 1957. The board of supervisors who oversee the race track, the Sports Car Racing Association of the Monterey Peninsula (SCRAMP), recently gave the go-ahead for Mazda to power on with the naming rights until 2016.

“Through the support of Mazda North American Operations, and its dedicated management who share our passion for motor racing, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is able to attract world-class racing to California’s Central Coast,” said Gill Campbell, CEO and general manager of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The course is home to a wide variety of motorsports from touring cars to superbikes and public track days. With Mazda’s help, SCRAMP has been given the opportunity to improve upon the track across the past decade by adding such items as permanent pit lane garages, permanent hospitality suites and extended track runoffs. Hi-definition monitors and radar-controlled speed signs have also been added to give on-sight spectators an extra special treat.

“Our successful partnership with SCRAMP and the Monterey County Parks Department during the last dozen years has made the raceway our home-away-from-home. At Mazda, we don’t have company picnics, we have track days,” said Jay Amestoy, Vice President of Public Affairs and Motorsports for Mazda North American Operations. The continued partnership with SCRAMP and Leguna Seca allows more than just continual improvements for the track as Mazda benefits in a big way. According to Amestoy, not one of their road vehicles, including the all-new CX-5 utility, reaches the public’s hands before extensive time bombing down the corkscrew.
