In 1989 a car was released that would forever change the world. The dawn of a new era in sports cars was in full swing, the first supercars were being produced, and the Japanese ”Golden Era” that brought us the Supra and NSX was hitting its peak. However after the dust cleared there was one car left standing, nobody ever thought that the Mazda Miata would punch so far above its weight.

Now 26 years, four generations, and nearly one-million cars later we have the 2016 Mazda MX-5, and it has just swept the tables in New York by winning the “2016 World Car of the Year” and the “2016 World Car Design of the Year” awards. This is also the first time a Japanese car has managed to earn the design award.

If you haven’t driven the car yet, you’ll understand why when you do. The “Driving Matters” slogan is not an advertising gimmick; from the time you first start the car up, you can tell that the engineers have poured their heart and soul’s into making the MX-5 a true work of art and one of the best driving experiences you’ll ever have. And then there is that stunning visual design that is far more muscular and aggressive than any of the previous models.

Over the years a phrase has been coined by Miata enthusiasts, “Miata is always the answer.” As Mazda continues to wow the world with new designs like the RF that we brought to you earlier this week, that phrase becomes more and more truthful. Keep up the good work Mazda, the world is watching.
