Currently, the majority of manufactures are scrambling to produce new and different ways to charge electric vehicles but Mitsubishi is going in a different direction. Soon to hit the market will be a device that plugs into the i-MiEV’s charge point and instead of drawling in power, it pumps it out. Named the MiEV Power Box, the accessory has the ability to supply up to 1500 watts of AC electricity from the vehicle’s battery pack to what ever an owner can hook up to it. Hypothetically, if there were to be a power outage, a Mitsubishi i-MiEV (i) could power a home for up to six hours.

When fully charged, the lithium-ion battery in both the i-MiEV and Minicab-MiEV have the capacity of 16 kilowatt per hour of electricity. The MiEV Power Box can take that power and distribute up to 1500 watts to an outside outlet. With the main focus being placed on supply energy to household systems, the device could power an average Japanese household with enough electricity to keep it going for a full day. So far, it has only been confirmed for Mitsubishi’s home market as its retail price is 149,800 yen (almost $1,800). It will first be available on April 27, 2012 and perhaps after that, a U.S. version will make its way over.
