The long-standing vehicle rental outfit, Hertz, now has a zero-emissions option for its San Francisco customers. Added to the California coast’s fleet are a variety of electric vehicles that include the Nissan LEAF, Mitsubishi “i” and the Smart EV. Available through Hertz’s exclusive “On Demand” program, the EVs allow visitors of the crowded urban area of San Francisco a refreshing option to the typical rental car.

“Electric Vehicles are a great option for short trips around the city or even weekend getaways,” says Hertz. The company has offered specific write-up on the charging and driving range of these cars. With the LEAF offering the widest range of the three EVs offered, the most a renter could travel is only up to 100 miles. Because of this, alternate drop-off points have been made available and a 24 hour assistance service is on hand. Hertz is determined that there should be no worry about renting an EV and offers a detailed FAQ sheet.

Due to the uncertainty behind driving an EV, Hertz suggests to its customers that they ask themselves a few questions before they rent a LEAF or “i”.

“Ask yourself the following questions, when making your Electric Vehicle reservation:

  • What is the maximum range of my Electric Vehicle?
  • Is my final destination within the range of the vehicle?
  • Will I have access to a three prong 110 volt outlet?
  • Is there a Level 2 charging station nearby/on the way?
  • Will I have time to park and charge?”
