An investigation by the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration(NHTSA) into the Buick Lacrosse has spawned a recall by Buick and General Motors. The problem at hand involves the Buick’s electronic stability control (ESC) system and affects certain 2012 model year cars. General Motor’s Stabilitrak ESC system module was programmed incorrectly on the Lacrosse which could make the system unable to detect a sensor malfunction. Due to a Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard, number 126, all vehicles must be equipped with a warning light that indicates if and when the ESC system is no longer working.

This light on Buick Lacrosses built between June 9 and July 2, 2011 could not illuminate, thus violating a federal law. The sensor issue could also cause the ESC system to operate erratically and without being provoked. This could cause a loss of control due to the ESC taking over the braking system. General Motors dealerships will remedy the issue with a reprogram free of charge. The full recall will go into action later this month.
