The all-new, all Skyactiv and all Zoom-Zoom utility has only be available for a short time, but its award list seems to be building faster and faster. The latest accolade given to the compact, 2013 Mazda CX-5 came by way of WardsAuto World for the vehicle’s innovative and useful interior. Earning a spot on this year’s “10 Best Interiors” list for its debut year is the crossover which, according to Mazda, is ” better, stronger and smarter” than the rest of its competition.

“For CX-5 to be honored with such a distinct award is a testament to Mazda’s passionate attention to every detail – from dynamics and engineering to safety and design,” said Jim O’Sullivan, president and CEO, Mazda North American Operations. In order to be considered for a spot on the list, all vehicles must be either all-new or significantly altered from previous in the eyes of Wards. Like the evaluation outfit’s “10 Best Engines” list, the editors look for numerous factors to determine which interiors deserve a spot. Subjects such as material selection, ergonomics, driver information, safety, overall value, touch points/comfort, fit and finish as well as the general level of aesthetics and harmony are all taken into consideration. One rather interesting aspect is Ward’s doesn’t hold a price cap for entrants. This means that the little Mazda, which starts at $20,695, went up against the likes of triple digit luxury vehicles. With available leather seating with heat, Tom-Tom supplied navigation and a useful layout, the CX-5 is indeed an inexpensive, compact SUV that doesn’t feel as such.
