The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has awarded Volkswagen with another Top Safety Pick: otherwise known as their highest ranking award offered. The Routan minivan earned the company’s ninth pick, giving VW a total of nine awards across their model line. In the U.S. auto market, no other manufacture can match the company’s number of Top Safety Picks. Front, side and rear crash testing takes place to determine the IIHS ratings as well as the outfit’s new roof-strength testing. In order to be even considered for a top pick, a vehicle must feature electronic stability control and head protection airbags.

“The Routan’s performance demonstrates Volkswagen’s ongoing commitment to safety,” said Institute president Adrian Lund. “Vehicles earning TOP SAFETY PICK status afford the best overall protection in the most common kinds of crashes, and have electronic stability control for avoiding many crashes altogether.” Welcoming the van into the VW top pick club are the CC, Jetta, Jetta SportWagen, Passat, Tiguan, Touareg, Golf and GTI.
