Hyundai Motor America will be recalling certain model years of its Veracruz and Sante Fe SUVs due to a potentially faulty front air bag system. According to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) report, the problem stems from the vehicle’s air bag clock spring. The contact assembly for the driver’s side SRS may simply be damaged from age, causing a high resistance condition in the system’s electrical circuit. If damaged, the spring will not allow the air bag to deploy in the event of an accident.

The recall is affecting a total of 205,233 Hyundai SUVs. Certain 2007 and 2008 model year Veracruz premium SUVs built between December 26, 2006 and March 21, 2008 are affected. Sante Fe crossovers built from April 19, 2006 through March 20, 2008 (2007 and 2008 model years) are also being recalled. The full recall will go under way later in September and Hyundai dealers will replace the air bag clock spring assembly free of charge.
