Having siblings can be a blessing but it can also be a detriment. In the Mazda Tribute’s case, being related to the Ford Escape has put the SUV in hot water. The first generation utilities debuted at the same time and now, they’re both being recalled for the same issue. Centered around the early 3.0 liter V6 models, the speed control system has a heavy chance of failing. Due to poor clearance between the engine’s cover and the control cable, the system can get stuck if driven hard and or wide open. If this occurs, a Tribute could hurtle forward without restraint and the event can happen regardless of the speed control’s activation.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Mazda is looking into approximately 217,500 vehicles. Affected Tributes are 2001 through 2006 model years as well as a few 2008s. Only SUVs equipped with the 3.0 liter V6 are at risk and the automaker is taken two steps in fixing the problem. New engine covers with better clearance are being built and will be installed mid August. Until then, certified dealers will temporarily disconnect the speed control cable if requested. The remedy will take place at no extra cost to owners.
