Subaru is recalling about 5,379 Outback and Legacy vehicles because “the inner and outer shafts of the steering column assembly may become disengaged from one another.”

The affected 2013 model vehicles were manufactured from Feb. 15, 2012, through June 15, 2012.

If the shafts become disengaged, the driver would lose the ability to steer the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash, according to U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Subaru said it will notify owners, and dealers will replace the steering column assembly with a new one, free of charge.

The recall is expected to begin on or before May 15, 2013.
